Every oak leaf has two greens. On the top, a waxy cuticle that prevents water loss by evaporation makes the leaf look dark green. But the underside has a paler, matt surface, created by tiny pores (stomata) which control water loss and carbon dioxide exchange. When the leaves of an oak tree flicker in the wind you see both its sealed and pourous surfaces to the atmosphere, like a fish showing its gills.
