reservoir and
swallows
oil on canvas, 54ins x 40ins, 1370mm x 1020mm.
Rheidol reservoir, central wales: one summer i saw
swallows
and martins skimming still water and could not forget it. i
came
back the following year and asked a local friend, Rhian
Thomas,
when would be the best time to find the water like a
mirror.
She said early morning - and the next day, there it was.

choosing glaze base
colours: comparing glaze tests with oil study
colours.
The charcoal from the composition stage above has been dusted off
to prevent
dirtying the first paint layers.

first glaze
base : thin oil washes of cadmium red and
yellow provide a good
reflecting surface for green glazes, making the water look
rich and deep.

green
glaze, first try, then removed because
of lack of purity of effect.

new glaze
base:colours for
dark-on-light glazes (upper) and ight-on-dark (lower).
This will producea glaze quality contrast, enhancing the
difference between textured,
dark trees and filmy, bright sky.
