| A field of Lioness rape comes up to chest height, though sometimes it can grow to eye level. Few if any artists have studied this crop which, amongst other things, provides oil for petrol.
Lioness is a winter sown conventional (as opposed to hybrid) rape variey developed in Germany. Although outyielded by recent introductions, with fungicide treatment it continues to do well across Britain. It has average levels of disease resistance but a high oil content and good field characteristics such as a short stem and resistance to lodging (tendency to bend and collapse).
Other paintings that show this crop are Swallows at 9pm , Oil seed rape for Petrol and Green Fire.
