Night

time: starlight in the night sky comes from deep time, out of human time. But we see this in a landscape of moonlit contrails, house lights and lights of passing cars. The layering of time is a theme of these paintings.

visibility: at night we see things on the edge of vision. Painting is an art that brings things into and out of visibility all the time, so night can have a special interest to painters.

tree painted without artificial light : What would a painting of an oak tree look like made at night with no illumination, on a board darker than the night sky?
