night

Visibility: at night we see things on the edge of vision. Painting is an art that brings things into and out of sight, so night can have a special interest for painters.

Tree painted without artificial light
: What would a painting of an oak tree look like made at night with no illumination, on a board darker than the night sky? Because the eye's powers of resolution are so much weaker in low light, I could not see the rough brush marks as I made the painting. I saw an image materialising that looked like the tree in the field, but at sunrise the sharp edges became lies.

The painting has a message about the limits of experience. It only resembles the original vision in a twilit room: a light much lower than the screen brightness of your digital device.

What does a waterfall look like at night?
